“Most people see death as the boogeyman in the closet,” said David Crosby back in 2020.
“I’m at the end of my life,” he continued, “so…I have to look at it.”
He could have looked at it way back in 1965. [Clip]
[“To everything turn, turn, turn
There is a season turn, turn, turn
And a time to every purpose under Heaven
A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep
To everything turn, turn, turn
There is a season turn, turn, turn…”]
David Crosby’s “time to die” came last Wednesday night, January 18, 2023.
And yes, David Crosby did think about dying long after 1965. [Clip]
[“Yeah, well, it’s a reality with me. With most people it’s sort of the boogeyman in the closet. They’re terrified of it. But they haven’t looked at it.”]
Yet, God has~ looked at it.
He told us in the Bible, through His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, exactly what death is.
“Some shall come forth that have done good unto the resurrection of life, and they that have done evil unto the resurrection of damnation,” Jesus warned.
That very “resurrection of damnation” will be:
“Outer darkness.”
“Fire unquenchable.”
A “worm undying.”
The sinner’s life of torment, you see, has no likeness to that which pains the body here.
When you hear the word, “darkness,” you think of how to light it up.
Of “outer,” you think of a line to cross over.
Not so in hell.
The “darkness” of hell no fire can penetrate with light.
And that “darkness” being “outer” has a great abyss attached to it that no man can cross over.
When you hear the word, “fire,” you think of how to quench it.
When you hear the word, “worm,” you think of how to squish it.
Not so in hell.
It’s a different kind of fire that has no light…which unquenchably~ burns without consuming.
The worm in hell is altogether a different kind of reptile than what crawls on the ground on earth.
This “worm” of hell does not die, it burrows its slimy self into the sinner, and eats away eternally.
This is scary stuff.
And as Crosby mocks about, it does terrify.
Thus it must be the part of the wise not to regard the present, but that which follows after, and to lay down the foundations of a God-pleasing life.
Bad advice. [Clip]
[“You’ve had so many health problems. You’re now, you know, I don’t, close to 80 or something. And you always see yourself as a guy running out of time.” “Well, you know, I am at the end of my life, Howard, and its a very strange thing. And here’s what I’ve come to about it. It’s not how much time you’ve got, ’cause we really don’t know. I could have two weeks; I could have ten years. It’s what you do with the time you do have. And so, I’m trying to really spend it well. Whatever each day that I get, I’m very grateful for it, and I try to do it making music, ’cause I think the world needs music.”]
The world does not ‘need’ music.
The world needs God, His plan of salvation through belief in Jesus Christ, and participation in the community of the faithful, Christ’s Holy Church.
Yet…if the world does need music, David Crosby’s final days were nothing short of tragic. [Clip]
[“How is your health? Like, I know you suffer from a lot…” “Surprisingly good, man! It’s, I’m, nothing’s broken yet. I’m waiting! Hahaha! I am losing my ability to play guitar. That’s kind of tough.” “Why?” “I’ve got tendonitis in both hands.”]
The soul is more precious than fingers, or toes, or hands, and feet and eyes.
The more we hold onto this fleeting life the more we see it slipping away. [Clip]
[“I’m standing on the porch
Like it’s the edge of a cliff
Beyond the grass and gravel lies a certain abyss
And I don’t think I will try it today
I’m facing a squall line of a thousand-year storm
I don’t know if I’m dying or about to be born”]
You were born.
You were dying.
Now you’re dead.
David Crosby’s famous last words, the very day he was to die, were:
Very deep, spiritual, thought-provoking, pondering what it means for me, and for my generation which Crosby was a part, and is coming to an end.
I received this little email homily by the late Geronta Symeon Kragiopoulos from Papa Demetrios – Orthodox Agape, which turned out to be quite providential timed to the Vid David Crosby is Dead.
In reflecting on Crosby’s life and words in your Vid, his subtle nihilism wrapped in his musical talent really stood out — here Crosby has bravely faced what he believes is his own extinction, annihilation, at death, to live on through his music.
What I’d focused on is really a form of self-idolatry — Music was Crosby’s god and he its son – Crosby, son of Music.
In contrast, also providentially coming across Chris Hillman today, The Byrd’s co-founder, pioneer musician and architect of folk country rock, and Crosby partner back in the day,
The interview with Hillman is qualitatively different, he came to Christ and Orthodoxy, crossing a gulf of sadness and anger from a family tragedy, started living a faithful and fruitful life with wife, family, now grandchildren, and his heart is full of Christ. Music is Hillman’s God-given talent, not his god.
Homily 4: Are You Making Progress Toward God,
or Toward Your Own Idol?
The Parable of the Rich Fool [Luke 12:16-21]
[Part 3 of 15]
“Man was created to have God. As things have unfolded, however, he searches for God within himself; and finally, in the end, he views himself as God. He constructs his own idol within, and this entire process reveals itself as self-love. Yet, this is not merely a kind of careful attention to the self. Rather, it is a pathological state where man turns entirely toward himself. And this is the main concern of those who do this — of those who have the ability to do this, and even of those who are unable to do this. In other words, their main concern is to store up abundant goods for many years.”
Thanks for a great, poignant Video. Keeping it real, as usual. God bless you, Bro!
It is not a dogma of the Church, but many Saints and Doctors of the Church taught “The Fewness of the Saved”. Sacred Scripture, of course, tells us “Many are called, few are chosen.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeMxaadVWc4
In spite of his words, i believe he was a good man and (perhaps uncknowingly) inspired by The Lord to create beautiful music. I believe Christ Loves Good people and that Crosby isn’t condemned.

At 81, you don’t joke around about this.

You now need a holy one to intercede for you.

Nailed it!

Too late. Once you are dead, the fate of your soul is sealed.
Fiona: If David Crosby’s soul is in Purgatory, then he could use the prayers of the Church Militant to intercede and pray for his soul.
