Water Into Wine
“ON THE THIRD DAY there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee and the mother of Jesus was there.”
What is the third day?
The first is the day of sin, where John the Baptist calls us to repentance.
The second is the day of the grave, where Jesus calls us to be buried with Him in baptism.
The third, as the prophet Hosea says, is the day God raises us up through baptism, and calls us to the heavenly banquet.
Both Jesus and His disciples are called to the wedding banquet at Cana.
Having failed of wine, Mary says to Jesus, “They have no wine.”
Perhaps to buy more wine?
But Jesus says to Mary:
“What is it between you and me? Mine hour is not yet come.”
A mystic prefiguration, veiled with sacramental signification.
For when Jesus’ hour does come, the wine He sheds at the Cross is by Mary who bore Him, from whom He took flesh and blood.
Here at Cana, the water He turns into wine is by His heavenly Father Who eternally begot Him, with Whom He shares divinity.
No rebuke to His mother by Jesus, since straightaway Mary says to the servants, “Whatever he says, do it.”
“Fill the waterpots with water,” Jesus tells the servants. “Draw out,and bring to the ruler of the feast.”
The ruler amazed says to the bridegroom:
“Every man serves the good wine first, then after all have drunk, that which is worse. But you have saved the best for last!”
Water drawn from the waterpots of Moses’ law is of the Old Covenant.
Wine drawn from the cup of Jesus‘ blood is of the New Covenant.
The Old fails to inebriate, the New ever satiates.
Our wedding garment is not of the Old whose fringes must remind hard hearts to keep God’s law.
Ours is the wedding garment of the New whose fringes are woven within by the Holy Spirit.
The Old water “fails” to change the inner man.
The New wine purifies, deifies, and sanctifies for the Master’s use, partaken at the table of every Lord’s Supper.
“This beginning of miracles did Jesus, manifesting His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.”
It was done for the disciples’ coming task, not for extravaganza.
Prepping them to preach salvation’s plan.
“New wine makes glad the heart of man!”
Merci
“The new wine vs the old, is echoed here in Heb 11:39-40
39 And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:
40 God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made complete.
“some better thing” is a vast understatement.”
what is the plan of salvation they were to preach. How can i know i am going to heaven?
LOVE JESUS! STUDY THE WORD OF GOD
Dear John Rouse,
God’s plan of salvation is to first prepare yourself for Holy Baptism.
Then after being immersed in the water and the Holy Spirit enters into you, you are ready to take Holy Communion, the New Wine of the New Covenant! +bn
Thank you Brother Nathanael for this upload. listening to you just makes me want to hear even more. May God bless you.
I’ve enjoyed these. I wish they were a little longer, so you could go into more detail.
“The New wine purifies, deifies, and sanctifies for the Master’s use, partaken at the table of every Lord’s Supper.”
Most evangelicals and “non-denominational” offshoot protestant churches conduct The Lord’s Supper/Eucharist as an afterthought once or twice a year perhaps.
One the other hand, I heard one Baptist preacher say recently that passing the plate for $ was a form of worship.
Thanks brother Nathanael. Excellent commentary on the wedding at Cana.
“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me”. – John 14,6
“Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” – John 17,3.
Dear Brother Nathanael, what a beautiful video, with such beautiful commentary.
Thanks for posting this to remind all of Christ’s infinite love.
